Lale: For me, a song is only as good as its story. If I can’t connect the words with my own life, a beautiful melody won’t keep me listening. Give me one voice and something simple behind it. The quieter, the better.

Bora: I can’t stand sitting still when music is playing. If it hasn’t got a strong beat that makes me move, it’s just background noise. I’m happiest when the floor is shaking and the crowd is jumping around me.

Seda: Words get in my way, especially when I’m trying to think. I’d rather lose myself in a long piece in which dozens of instruments slowly build up a mood.

My grandfather keeps about three hundred records in a wooden cabinet, and he still plays them on Sunday mornings, from the first track to the last. “An album is like a novel,” he says. “You don’t start at chapter seven.” My sister Ayça finds this funny. She has a different playlist for every mood and usually skips a song if it hasn’t caught her attention within ten seconds. “Why should I wait for something I might like?” she asks.

They argue about this at every family dinner. However, whenever a television talent show comes on, they both reach for the remote control at the same moment. “All those high notes and no feeling,” my grandfather sighs, and for once Ayça nods.

Nehir has played the violin since she was seven, and she now spends six hours a day practising at the conservatory. Surprisingly, she hardly ever listens to violin music at home. “After all those hours of careful scales, I want something rough and loud,” she says with a laugh. She has seen the same local rock band eleven times, and she says that their small mistakes on stage are what she loves most. “A studio recording is too perfect. It’s like a photo that has been edited too many times.” Still, she adds that she would never give up the violin, because nothing else makes her feel so calm and focused.
