Many adults claim that friends met online are not real friends. This view is understandable, but it ignores how friendship actually works. What holds friends together is not the place where they meet but trust, shared interests and support in difficult times. Someone in another city who listens to you every week offers these things just as well as a neighbour does.
It is true that a message cannot replace a hug, and that some people hide behind false profiles. Yet these risks can be reduced by being careful and by telling parents before meeting anyone in person. For these reasons, an online friendship should be judged by how people treat each other, not by the screen between them.

A small circle of close friends is more valuable to a teenager than a long list of contacts. Close friendships need time, and a student with a heavy exam schedule has very little of it. Besides, people learn to show their weaknesses without fear only in long, honest conversations. A classmate with hundreds of followers may still have nobody to call when something goes wrong.
Some people argue that a wide network opens more doors, and this is partly true, especially when someone is looking for a job. However, a teenager’s most urgent need is emotional security, not professional connections.
